Current Projects:

Although I "officially" completed the concept designs and illustrations for Cyan's next project, I am still finishing a few last minute designs. I am currently writing and designing a short comic book story for a Star Wars graphic novel that will rejoin the entire design team from Star Wars: Episode 3. I am also preparing for a major exhibit of my work for the sci-fi convention "les utopiales" in Nantes, France this coming November. I am also scheduled to do some production painting for the upcoming movie Underworld 2.

Bio:

Stephan was born in France. He knew very early on that he wanted to be an artist. At age 15, he entered an art school in Paris and learned the foundations of art.

Four years later, he attended an animation school that was also in Paris. He has yet to complete the requirements for his degree there, as his studies were interrupted when he was hired to work in Japan on the animated series Inspector Gadget.

From that moment, he found myself traveling from Asia to California as he moved forward into his career in the animation industry, which eventually led him to theme parks, television and movies.

This path gave him the opportunity to work for such films as Star Wars: Episodes 2 and 3, Virus, Dragon Heart 2, Titan AE, Star Trek: The Experience, Red Planet, and I, Robot. As he stepped forward, he walked finally into the game industry, in which he currently works for Cyan.

Inspiration:

I am inspired by periods from the Renaissance up to today's modern art. It is quite a list. I am very fond of the American illustrators from 1930 to 1960, the art deco period, and the orientalist period in particular.

Favorite Game Art:

Riven

Why I Got into the Industry:

I've always liked the quality of the visuals in Riven and Myst III: Exile, so when the opportunity to become the visual art director at Cyan presented itself, I just couldn't refuse.

Tools I Can't Live Without:

Photoshop, because all my paintings are digital. Photoshop has allowed me to establish myself as a painter. It would definitely be a challenge to start all over again without it.

Music I Listen to While Working:

Mainly soundtracks. I like composers like Williams, Goldsmith, Elfman, and Zimmer. I like the classics, romantic jazz, and a variety of pop artists like Sting, Peter Gabriel, Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morissette, Maroon 5, and Coldplay.

Favorite Book:

Lately, Perdido Street Station by China Mieville.

Favorite Movie:

There are just too many to list.
